Layers the Flavors to Celebrate Summer

The simplest salad can easily become the centerpiece to your table or the showstopper to your potluck! All you have to do is take a little time to plan and arrange your layers in a decorative fashion. Above we’ve got a version of the Garden Layer Salad. This one first appeared in The Tasteful Muse, Volume One. From bottom to top it’s green leaf lettuce, steamed beets, cucumbers, jícama, red bell pepper and more green leaf lettuce. The lettuce layers were tossed with a vinaigrette to keep them moist and flavorful.

Get creative with your layers! Use different colors and shapes, the variance will be appealing. A layer of beans will not only add interesting color and texture but also protein… perhaps making your layered salad a one dish dinner! Fruit and tuna also make great layers, and grated cheese sprinkled on top is a great finish. Embrace what your market has an abundance of right now for inexpensive additions to the salad. Watch for things like corn on the cob (grill and cut off of the cob), green beans (blanch and cool), cherry tomatoes (red, yellow, etc.), avocados, etc. There are many more layered salad ideas in The Tasteful Muse, Volume One.
